What is oil cleansing?

Solubility is the property of a solid, liquid, or gaseous chemical substance called solute to dissolve in a solid, liquid, or gaseous solvent to form a solution of the solute in the solvent.

Say what??! Oil cleansing works on the principal of solubility, which means in basic terms, oil dissolves oil.So essentially, the oil used to cleanse your skin, will dissolve the oil that has hardened with impurities and become stuck in your pores.  Oil is not the enemy, it is our bodies way of protecting, healing and nourishing it's biggest organ, its skin.  So many commercial cleansers and soaps are designed to strip oil from the skin, initially drying (or over drying), which often causes our smart skin to over produce more oil in an effort to replace what is being stolen.  Oil cleansing is a safe and effective way of drawing out these old oils, toxins and impurities without stripping the skin, in fact, moisturising and nourishing the skin as it cleanses.

How often should I oil cleanse?

We recommend oil cleansing once at the end of the day, before bed.  You shouldn't need to cleanse first thing in the morning if you've gone to bed with a clean face and your pillowcase is clean!  If you have used the night oil, this would have soaked in beautifully during the night and you will find you don't wake up oily.  Simply run your face under the shower or, wipe over with a wet face cloth, dry, and then apply your day oil as normal.  Some people may choose to cleanse earlier in the day also if they work out or run etc in the middle of the day and, for most people, this should be ok.

Do I need to use the moisturising oils with the cleanser?

No of course not! But the three have been formulated to work in synthesis with one another, providing differing types of fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients in specific amounts for specific times of the day. For example, the night oil contains rosehip, which works deep within your pores as you sleep to sooth the drying effects of the days sun exposure. Whether you choose to moisturise with TOCC products or not, please remember that oil cleansing is only one (albeit important) piece of the beautifully balanced skin picture.  We do recommend that whatever products you use on your skin, moisturisers, concealers, foundations etc, should be as natural as possible, and when it comes to foundation, preferably mineral based to allow the skin to breathe.

Can TOCC Day Oil be used as a sunscreen?

No. Although coconut oil has an spf of around 8, we do not recommend you use it specifically as a sunscreen.  It is not certified for use as a sunscreen by the Australian Cancer Council.

Why do I need to run the Day Oil under warm water to loosen, why isn't it always a liquid?

We looked at different bases for our beautiful day oil, but extra virgin coconut oil came out the clear winner every time.  It is antimicrobial, anti fungal, antiviral, full of beautiful fatty acids, keeps the skins connective tissue strong (combating sagging and wrinkles), and has an SPF of around 8*, making it ideal for using during the day.  So the next hurdle was how to make it a liquid, and the answer was fractionated coconut oil. Unfortunately fractionated oil is literally, only a fraction of the oil and unfortunately, what was taken out to render it a liquid was so much of what made it so brilliant for the skin.  So we decided holding it under a hot tap for 20 seconds was a small effort to go to for all the amazing health benefits it offered! We use the time to apply our deodorant or get dressed after our shower, you don't need to sit there twiddling your thumbs! And in summer most places, it's a consistent liquid so, easy as.

Do I use hot or cold water to cleanse?

You want to use very warm, steamy water to open your pores and dissolve the build up of old oils and impurities. Not scalding though!

What do I do if irritation occurs?

We highly recommend doing a patch test when you first receive your oils.  This involves rubbing a small amount of oil behind your ear, leaving it for a few minutes, then removing with a clean cloth.  You can also do this with the day and night oil although you may choose to leave these on.  We recommend testing them separately to ensure if your skin reacts, you will know which oil has caused the reaction and avoid it.

Whilst all our oils are natural and pure, some people have reactions even to natural things (nuts and bee stings are examples).  If itchiness, stinging, intense irritation or hives occur, cease use immediately.  Rinse your skin thoroughly with a clean face cloth to remove the product which may be causing the irritation.  Whilse you may start to see results within the first couple of uses, it may take a couple of weeks for your skin to get rid of any build up, and adapt and adjust to being balanced.  At no time should it leave your skin painful or unbearably itchy.

NUT ALLERGY: Please be aware that TOCC Night Oil contains nut products, specifically Sweet Almond Oil.  TOCC Cleansing Oil and Day Oil are both nut free however are made using the same equipment as the Night Oil and may contain traces of nut, therefore they may not be suitable for people with severe nut allergies.  We do not use peanut or peanut oils in any of our manufacturing processing.

Can I use TOCC products if I am pregnant?

Please consult your Doctor, Midwife or pregnancy caregiver before using any of The Oil Cleansing Company products.
